Pigment History

The story of PB36

A permanent, granular turquoise for seas, skies and cool greens - the cool end of the cobalt family.

How it is made

Made like cobalt blue but with chromium introduced into the crystal lattice, shifting the hue toward a cool turquoise. The high-temperature calcination makes it fully permanent.

In the hands of the masters

A 20th-century addition with no Old Master pedigree, cobalt turquoise gives contemporary painters a cool, mineral sky-and-water blue.

Origin
Synthetic mineral - a cobalt-chromium variant.
Chemistry
Cobalt chromium aluminate.
