Pigment History

The story of PR101

Permanent, opaque and fast-drying - the modern, predictable face of the earth-red family.

How it is made

Mars reds are precipitated from iron salts under controlled conditions, giving pure, consistent oxides free of the impurities of natural earths. Milled in oil they produce opaque, fast-drying, fully permanent reds.

In the hands of the masters

The natural iron oxides - red ochre, bole - are among the oldest pigments, found in prehistoric cave art and the flesh tones of every era. The synthetic Mars versions give modern painters that same permanence with cleaner, brighter hues.

Origin
Synthetic - controlled-precipitation iron oxide.
Chemistry
Synthetic iron oxide (Fe₂O₃), available from earthy to vivid reds and violets.
