Pigment History

The story of PY3

A bright, transparent, non-toxic yellow - valued for clean tints and glazes where cadmium’s opacity is unwanted.

How it is made

Hansa yellows are synthesised from arylide chemistry to give bright, transparent, lead-free yellows. Milled in oil they produce clean, staining yellows with good - though not cadmium-grade - lightfastness.

In the hands of the masters

A 20th-century pigment - hansa yellow gave modern painters a non-toxic, transparent alternative to the lead and chrome yellows of the past.

Origin
Synthetic organic - introduced 1910.
Chemistry
An arylide (monoazo) yellow.
