Pigment History

The story of PY35

The standard for opacity and lightfastness in yellow - vivid and permanent, though it requires care because of its cadmium content.

How it is made

Cadmium yellow is precipitated from cadmium salts and calcined to the desired shade, from pale lemon to deep. Ground in oil it gives a dense, opaque, brilliantly lightfast yellow.

In the hands of the masters

A mid-19th-century arrival, cadmium yellow gave Monet, Cézanne and the Post-Impressionists a permanent, brilliant yellow the Old Masters never had.

Origin
Synthetic - cadmium sulphide, introduced c.1840.
Chemistry
Cadmium sulphide, a synthetic inorganic pigment.
